According to The Athletic journalist Jon Mackenzie, Nottingham Forest should look at signing Burnley’s winger Maxwel Cornet this summer after the Clarets were relegated last season.

After signing Taiwo Awoniyi, it has been reported that Forest is looking to bolster their options with the possible signing of Cornet, but their first approach was rebuffed by the new Championship side.

Mackenzie believes Cronet could in fact be a wonderful signing for Steve Cooper’s men as his versatility playing both as a winger and a full-back will help them throughout the season.

He said on the Tifo Football YouTube channel, “With Burnley being relegated last season, Maxwel Cornet becomes an attractive prospect for a lot of teams. A quick powerful transition attacker Cornet has excelled so far in his short time at the Lancashire club for Burnley, he played as a left midfielder or in a striker partnership.

“But the season before he featured as a left-back for Lille. Again, this flexibility would be attractive to Forrest. Cornet is also dangerous from free kicks and could help replace another aspect of James Garner’s contribution.” (3:46)

TIF Thoughts on Cornet to Forest…

Despite facing relegation last season, Cornet was the shining light for Burnley last season as the Ivorian bagged nine goals and two assists across all competitions and has since garnered a lot of interest from other Premier League sides like West Ham United and Everton.

While Cornet showed he is a formidable attacker by ranking in the 75th percentile for non-penalty goals compared to other strikers across Europe’s top five leagues, he also showed his defensive capabilities by ranking in the 81st percentile for tackles and the 70th for clearances. (Fbref)

This versatility in both attack and defence is going to be crucial for Forest next season as they may find it hard to keep the ball against the higher-level Premier League sides and will need their forward players to put the work in on the other side of the ball.
