Journalist Ross Gregory has claimed on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel that a shock transfer exit could be on the cards at Newcastle United.

Earlier in the summer, there had been talk of Newcastle looking to cash in on maverick winger Allan Saint-Maximin, although his reported price tag of over £40m has seemingly put a lot of interested teams off, as no offers have been forthcoming.

However, considering that Newcastle have already splashed out over £50m on new arrivals this summer, they may well look to try and sell one of their more valued assets to fund a move for someone such as Alexander Isak or Moussa Diaby.

Gregory believes that a shock sale could very well be on the cards at Newcastle this summer.

He said: “I think there is a chance of a surprise outgoing. I don’t think the squad’s kind of set in stone, I think there are one or two players there who, if the right offer came in, I think the club would definitely consider it.

Should Newcastle sell Saint-Maximin?

“There’s going to be a lot of movement between now and September 1st, there’s going to be plenty of movement as it hits August and the scramble continues and steps up a little bit.

“So I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some interest in some of Newcastle’s kind of fringe, but first-team players who maybe aren’t one of the ones who are inked in the starting XI, I wouldn’t be surprised.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

As it stands, Newcastle still have a very bloated squad, which could well be restricting their movement in the transfer market, with the likes of Dwight Gayle, Federico Fernandez and Karl Darlow all on the outskirts, but still picking up their wages from the club.

If Newcastle aren’t able to find a new home for these players, some more sellable assets such as Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron or Jamaal Lascelles could well be moved on to generate funds and space to operate in the final weeks of the transfer window.
