Football writer Jordan Cronin has expressed his disappointment after Kelland Watts picked up a bad injury with Newcastle United.
In an article for Newcastle World, the journalist explained that the 22-year-old had begun preseason well, as he was the only player to complete the full 90 minutes during the opening match against National League side Gateshead.
However, things have taken a turn for the worse as he has now undergone surgery on his knee after sustaining an injury whilst in Austria – as revealed first on Instagram.
While discussing the bad news on Twitter, Cronin explained that this was a double blow as it could now stop the Newcastle player going out on loan as well.
He wrote: “Big blow for Kell Watts after beginning pre-season in such positive fashion. The defender was set to go out on loan this summer but is now facing an extended spell on the sidelines.”

TIF Thoughts on Kelland Watts and Newcastle…
It seems as though Cronin isn’t the only one to be disappointed by the news, with Watts understandably upset by it too. Indeed, on his Instagram account he stated he was ‘absolutely gutted’ following the injury.
And as mentioned, this fresh fitness setback will be an even harder pill to swallow with Watts now possibly unable to go on loan. Beforehand, he had been linked with a possible temporary switch to Wigan Athletic.
The defender had spent time with the Latics last season, helping them gain promotion as League One champions. But his chance to make a return now looks to be in doubt following this untimely injury.
