Journalist Luke Edwards has expressed his bemusement after hearing that Newcastle United’s summer transfer budget is ‘so small’.

It seems as though the Magpies opted to pay for recent goalkeeper signing Nick Pope in instalments, only paying a certain amount upfront, instead of spending a large chunk of cash immediately.

In light of this news, Edwards took to Twitter to admit that he was ‘confused’ by the club’s inability to spend big despite the amount of money their extremely wealthy owners have available to them.

Indeed, the journalist took to Twitter to express his feelings on the matter, writing: “I get the instalments stuff, I get why #nufc say they are limiting spending and I accept FFP is a problem, but I’m still slightly confused by [the] fact the budget is so small and so strict with PIF as majority stakeholders given the money they are spending on golf.”

TIF Thoughts on PIF and Newcastle…

As Edwards alludes to, PIF are currently bankrolling the LIV Golf series, paying the likes of Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson a reported $200m (£159m) and $150m (£119m) respectively.

With that in mind, money certainly is no issue for the Newcastle owners. However, as made clear by the Pope transfer structure, they don’t seem to be splashing the cash in lump sums.

Indeed, they seem to be running a tight ship with a strict budget and this certainly has left Edwards rather baffled by the goings-on behind the scenes.

With players such as Leeds United’s Jack Harrison and Everton’s Antony Gordon linked with possible transfers, it will be interesting to see whether or not PIF will allow the club the resources to go out and sort moves for such deals this summer.
