People ‘involved’ with Newcastle United’s top summer target Moussa Diaby say the Bayer Leverkusen winger is open to a move to the Tyneside club this summer, according to journalist Graeme Bailey.

The Magpies have been looking to bring in the Frenchman for the majority of the summer so far and while they have not officially moved for the player yet, they have held talks with the club over the transfer.

Bailey also recently revealed that Diaby would be open to a move to the Premier League club and he believes this is one of the main reasons why the club are pursuing the player, despite links to other forwards like Jack Harrison and Arnaud Kalimuendo.

He said on the LOADED MAG NUFC transfer show: “They love Moussa Diaby, they really do. I revealed a few weeks ago they’ve had talks to try and get him. The player has said he wants to stay, but he would be prepared to come to Tyneside. I’ve been told from people involved he would come to Tyneside.

“And to be fair, that’s why they were pursuing him… you know behind the scenes, Moussa Diaby would be willing. For me, I’d take that risk on not [buying] a striker. I’d pile all the money I’ve got left in this budget to get Moussa Diaby.”

TIF Thoughts on Diaby to Newcastle…

The Magpies could use a top-class talent in their attacking line ahead of next season if they are to challenge the top six and push for a European spot. While they have the likes of Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, both failed to get double digits in either goals and assists.

Diaby on the other hand managed to do both with 17 goals and 14 assists in 42 games across all competitions for Leverkusen. The 23-year-old also ranked in the 94th percentile for assists, 91st for non-penalty goals, and 74th for progressive passes received compared to other attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues.

It has been reported the German club will not be accepting any bids under £60m, which is a steep price but if Newcastle wants to challenge and push themselves up to the table, signing players of this price is going to be essential.
