Newcastle United are still expected to bring in another central midfielder this summer, according to Dean Jones.
The transfer guru has been speaking on the latest Ranks FC podcast to share his insight on who still may be yet to come through the doors at St James’ Park.
Newcastle added to this area in January with the addition of Bruno Guimaraes, who made an impressive start to life in the Premier League.
And adding to the Brazilian flair on Tyneside, Joelinton has proven to be a player reborn under Eddie Howe, with the 25-year-old finding his feet in a deeper position following Steve Bruce’s departure.
However, Jones still believes the Toon are in search of further additions to the midfield, with PIF looking to bolster Howe’s squad in what is their first summer window at the helm.
He said: “The other position to look out for is that they probably will sign another central midfielder. They’re trying to find the right profile of player that fits.
“Again, they will pay what it takes to get the player. Boubacar Traore is a young central midfielder that’s been linked and there’s a guy at Lens, Seko Fofana – I don’t know much about him.
“Again, he’s somebody that’s on their radar.”
TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…
There definitely feels as if there is some room for improvement in the Newcastle midfield, with Jonjo Shelvey racking up 24 appearances in the Premier League despite his injury issues.
Do NUFC need to upgrade Shelvey?
Yes
No
There have been reports suggesting Lille central midfielder Amadou Onana is someone the Toon are showing an interest in this summer.
And with previous links to the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, it does seem as if a defensive-minded midfielder is what the Magpies are looking for in the coming weeks of this window.
