Newcastle United have Burnley forward Maxwel Cornet on their radar – and is a realistic option for the Magpies this summer.

This has been suggested by journalist Ben Jacobs, who has been speaking on the NUFC Matters YouTube channel to discuss potential arrivals at St James’ Park.

A host of Premier League sides have been linked with a potential move for the Burnley star, including the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Chelsea and the Toon.

It was Cornet who scored Burnley’s final goal in the Premier League which, ironically, came against the Magpies, but it was not enough to keep the Clarets afloat.

Amid links elsewhere between the Magpies and Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis, Jacobs claimed there had been no move made by the Tynesiders yet for Cornet, though he is a player on their radar this summer:

He said: “I think both of those players are realistic and definitely on Newcastle’s radar. Cornet is available for only about £18m, which is a really good price.

“And there’s reports out there that he’s been ‘offered to Newcastle United’, which is usually something an agent does when they’re trying to facilitate a move. And I think that’s a bargain price.”

TIF Thoughts on Jacobs’ comments…

Interestingly, Cornet shares an agent with several Newcastle stars, including Callum Wilson – so perhaps his representatives could turn to a familiar client. With reported interest coming from Spurs in Allan Saint-Maximin, we do wonder whether Cornet could be an option Dan Ashworth turns to if a big bid comes in for their French forward.

Would Cornet be a good addition for NUFC?

No

And at under £20m, the former Lyon ace is certainly a player who could provide the Toon with a fairly cheap option this summer and could even be a good backup for Saint-Maximin.

Cornet impressed in his spell at Burnley last season with nine goals and one assist in his 26 Premier League appearances, so could this be a player who’d be a suitable option to explore instead of Moussa Diaby?

The Bayer Leverkusen winger has been linked with Newcastle, however, it is apparent it would take a monumental bid to prise him away from the Bundesliga outfit.
