Jordan Cronin has slammed the latest news to emerge about Joelinton being suspended for Newcastle United’s next friendly.

Newcastle lost their second friendly in a row on Tuesday evening as Benfica put three past them in the Eusebio Cup, however, that wasn’t the worst part, with Jonjo Shelvey picking up a hamstring injury and Joelinton seeing red.

The revolutionised Brazilian midfielder picked up two yellow cards in the second half, which saw him handed his marching orders and as a result, will now miss the Magpies’ first home pre-season match of the summer against Atalanta on Friday.

Cronin was left unimpressed by the decision, given that suspensions in friendlies rarely mean anything – as he reacted to the news on Twitter by saying: “Well that’s daft.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

The Newcastle manager claimed that he never wants to see a red card for either team in a friendly as it ruins the occasion unless a tackle is not in the spirit of the game – something he didn’t think was the case with Joelinton’s bookings.
