CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Paris Saint-Germain outcast Georginio Wijnaldum would be open to a return to the Premier League this summer – and that Newcastle United could have an opportunity to bring him back to St James’ Park.

It is believed Wijnaldum is surplus to requirements at PSG and could be up for sale this summer, and therefore has been linked with a move back to his former club as they look to push the top six in the Premier League next season.

While there has not been much progression over the Dutchman’s potential return, Jacobs believes a deal could possibly be done between the two sides this summer and that Wijnaldum could be open to a Tyneside return.

Jacobs told Steve Wraith: “I don’t think there’s going to be any scenario where PSG and Newcastle don’t do business. I think it’s just about the reality of, at this stage, who might be available at PSG that Newcastle might consider.

“Probably the name that everyone’s going for is Gini Wijnaldum because there’s that affection there and he’s the one name that is surplus to requirements for sure. PSG will sell him or loan him, even, so there might be a window of opportunity for Newcastle there. And there’s lots of excitement and that would be popular, and I think that he would be open to a Premier League return.”

TIF Thoughts on Wijnaldum to Newcastle…

The Dutch international, who currently earns £180k per week, shone during his short stint at the Tyneside club, picking up 11 goals and five assists in 40 appearances and has since enjoyed a hugely successful career at Liverpool and PSG.

While it may be that the midfielder would still like to play at the top level of the game, a move to his former side would not be the worst thing as he could make an instant impact, they can afford his wages, and he can be a part of an exciting project under Eddie Howe, and the fans would love to see him back.

It is unknown how much the Magpies would need to part with in order to bring him back, but considering his age at 31 and the fact he is not needed at PSG, a bargain could be had for the Premier League side.
