Newcastle United hold an interest in Atalanta and Colombia striker Duván Zapata this summer.

That is according to Dean Jones, who was speaking to GiveMeSport about the Magpies’ potential transfer business this summer.

It’s no secret that Eddie Howe has been looking to add another out-and-out No 9 to his squad, with his two striking options at the moment being Callum Wilson and New Zealand international Chris Wood.

The Northern Echo has stated that Zapata, who has previously been called a ‘freight train of a striker’ could be available for £20m this summer, with the Magpies having an interest in the striker dating back to January, when they were initially told they would have to pay an £8m loan fee before a £35m permanent transfer.

Jones believes that Newcastle may look at signing the 31-year-old further down the line in the transfer window, with the striker seemingly not at the top of Howe’s wishlist at the moment.

“It got quite far down the road in January,” Jones said.

“They definitely do like him, so I can see why this one would start to re-emerge.

“I wouldn’t say there are really legs in it at this moment in time, but the longer we fall into this transfer window, I think there’s definitely more of a possibility that he starts to crop up as an option.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

We believe that Newcastle would be remiss to not add another striker to their squad this summer, but it has to be one that Eddie Howe desires.

If the former Bournemouth manager is not convinced on a move for Zapata, we believe Newcastle and PIF should begin to identify other targets more in the Howe mould.

However, we do think that the club need to make a move in the transfer market regarding a striker soon enough, with Wood’s £25m transfer from Burnley hardly setting the world alight and Wilson’s injury record suggesting that he can’t be trusted to remain fit for a full Premier League campaign.
