Newcastle United are ‘playing a waiting game’ for Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s price to fall towards the end of the summer, according to 90 min journalist Graeme Bailey.

One of the biggest news for the Tyneside club this summer is improving their striking options as they currently only have Callum Wilkson and Chris Wood in the squad at the time of writing. So far they have failed to do so with top target Hugo Ekitike opting for a move to Paris Saint-Germain instead.

However, it would appear Eddie Howe’s side could be in for Everton star Calvert-Lewin, who has also been a target for Arsenal, but the price is too high for the club. Bailey believes that Newcastle still wants the star and could be waiting for rot the price to come down.

Bailey told Loaded Mag NUFC: “He really wants Dominic Calvert-Lewin. That’s what I believe and I’m hearing that from quite a few people. Everton needs money, they’ve lost their massive sponsorship deal through the Russian oligarch…

“I think Newcastle are just playing the waiting game, they’ve been patient, I think they believe at some point Everton will take £35m, £40m for him. It’s my belief that’s the one Newcastle are waiting for.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Bailey’s comments…

When fully fit, Calvert-Lewin has proved he is one of the best strikers in the Premier League, during the 20/21 season where he managed to play 39 games across all competitions he picked up an impressive 21 goals and five assists for the Toffees.

For this reason, it is easy to see why Everton would be looking for the reported £60m fee, but with his recent injury problems which saw him miss 16 games last season due to a fractured toe, the Magpies are right in wanting to bring that price down.

As Bailey states, Everton’s financial problems could also play a factor in the sale of DCL as at the time of writing, they have only been able to bring in James Tarkowski on a free and after their recent 4-0 loss to Minnesota, they will probably want to improve the squad.

Newcastle is being smart in waiting for Everton to get desperate to sell, which in their current circumstance both on and off the pitch, could end up coming sooner rather than later. We will have to wait and see.
