Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Newcastle United are talking to agents regarding a mystery signing in this summer transfer window.

Newcastle have already brought in three new players this summer, but they are all in defensive areas of the pitch, and they have been linked with several attacking threats such as Jack Harrison, Arnaud Kalimuendo and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Much to the Magpies’ frustrations, they were on the brink of signing Hugo Ekitike, with a fee agreed between Reims and Newcastle, but failed discussions between the agent and the English club meant that the deal broke down.

Despite being linked with the likes of Moussa Diaby and Calvert-Lewin, Jones has claimed to GiveMeSport that Newcastle are in talks with agents over another significant player this summer.

He said: “It sounds like a lot of work is going on at Newcastle this week. We know about the Diaby and Calvert-Lewin links, but I think they are talking to agents about someone else significant right now.

“It’s a mystery who it is. I’m trying to work it out, but from talking to a few people, it feels like something is going on.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

The identity of the ‘mystery’ target is anyone’s guess, though the fact that Newcastle are yet to recruit an attacker this summer may point toward the Magpies talking to someone who operates in that area.

Assuming Ekitike is now off-limits and the likes of Diaby and Calvert-Lewin are known to be on the Toon’s transfer shortlist, it may well be that the player Jones references will be more left-field.

It seems slightly bizarre that Jones only knows this much rather than nothing at all, but what is clear is that there certainly seems to be plenty of activity behind the scenes, with PIF appearing keen to keep as much of the key details under wraps as the race to get the squad ready for the season’s kick-off continues, which should keep fans on their toes until the visit of Nottingham Forest in just over three weeks’ time.
