Insider Dean Jones recently claimed he believes Newcastle United will sign a ‘big-name’ striker this summer after links to the likes of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

The Magpies have been impressive in the transfer markets since their new owners, the Saudi Public Investment Fund, took over the club in October 2021. They have signed the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, and Sven Botman.

One player they have failed to bring in is a prolific striker after missing out on Ekitike to Paris Saint-Germain. But Jones believes that before the end of the current transfer window, they will have their man and he will be a ‘big-name’ in football.

He said on the Chasing Green Arrows YouTube channel, “There is no doubt that Newcastle do actually like this guy [Alexander Isak], they’ve sounded him out, gone further than that. They’ve progressed to find out what the terms are around the transfer.”

“Newcastle is definitely going to sign a striker, it’s going to be a big name. Now, the problem you’ve got with Isak is while yes, some people at Newcastle definitely like him, some really aren’t sold on him at a club record fee, which is what is going to be to sign him from Real Sociedad. That’s the big sticking point right now.”

Some of the names they have been linked with are Isak, who has bagged 43 goals in 128 games for Real Sociedad at just 22. Chelsea’s Armando Broja has emerged as a candidate after impressing during his stint at Southampton last season.

Espanyol’s Raul de Tomas has recently been linked after the Ekitike deal fell through after the 27-year-old bagged 17 goals and three assists in all competitions. Finally, and possibly the biggest name is Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who has also garnered interest from Arsenal after picking up 28 goals and nine assists in just 62 games for the Italian giants since he arrived in 2020.

All of these options could be great signings for Newcastle and have the potential to be the Magpies leading man as they try to break into the top six of the Premier League. Watching this unfold will certainly be fun for fans.
