Ben Jacobs has claimed that the reason why Manchester United might not sign Frenkie de Jong is if Barcelona are genuine about keeping him this summer.

Speaking on The Football Terrace’s Done Deal Show, Jacobs said“The reason why De Jong may not move to Man United is if Barcelona are genuine about keeping him, but the reality of the situation is that they’re not.”

Jacobs’ words will be somewhat reassuring for Manchester United fans, with, according to the journalist, Barcelona not genuine about keeping hold of De Jong this summer. If all goes to plan, then The Red Devils will have themselves a more than satisfactory summer transfer window come the end of August.

Erik ten Hag has already welcomed Christian Eriksen, and reportedly looks set to welcome Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez. If he can add De Jong to that list, too, then he should consider that a successful first transfer window in charge.

The former Ajax manager undoubtedly has a tough task ahead of him at United. Improvement will not happen overnight. But, signing reinforcements will be the first step towards taking United back to the top of English football.

TIF Thoughts on Frenkie de Jong…

Frenkie de Jong would be an instant upgrade on Manchester United’s current midfield options. Last season, as per FBref, he attempted more passes, completed more passes, and made more progressive passes per-90 when compared to Fred last season.

The Dutchman’s progressive passing ability would be particular important at Old Trafford, given how many low blocks Man United will come up against next season. If they can crack the code of beating low blocks, then The Red Devils may well be onto bigger things.
