Sky Sports content creator Chris Hamill believes that the number of Leicester City players now in the final year of their contracts could become a huge problem.
10 current Leicester players will see their deals expire at the end of the upcoming season, including Kasper Schmeichel, Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans and Jamie Vardy, as well as Youri Tielemans – who has been heavily linked with a move out of the King Power Stadium.
It has been a frustrating summer so far for Foxes’ supporters, with Brendan Rodgers’ side the only Premier League team yet to complete a transfer, and considering that a plethora of first-team regulars are scheduled to depart for free next summer, you would expect the manager to be well on his way in terms of rebuilding the squad as he desires.
However, the recruitment team are so far yet to bring in any fresh faces, with TalkSport transfer guru Alex Crook suggesting that the inactivity could cost Rodgers his job – and Hamill has now discussed another problem the manager has.
Speaking on Football Daily’s Sunday Vibes, he said:
“10 players are in the final year of their contract now. There’s an issue there bubbling under the surface if they don’t sort some things out pretty quickly.
“Not all of them are first-team players, but a lot of important components still in that list.”
TIF Thoughts on Leicester City…
Will Rodgers leaves Leicester?YesNo |
This window did seem like the opportune time for Rodgers to start over and ignite another attempt to breach the top six, but it could be an opportunity missed.
Daniel Amartey, Ayoze Perez, Nampalys Mendy, Ryan Bertrand and Hamza Choudhury are the other players now in the final 12 months of their contracts and have all been useful options for the Northern Ireland native.
With a few weeks left before the transfer deadline, it does remain to be seen who Leicester may target to bolster their squad, and while they are still a team capable of competing, as shown by their recent finishes in the Premier League, we think investment is needed – and the lingering problem of so many expiring contracts only reinforces that.
What is a ‘content creator’?! Another nonentity with little knowledge about football? Leicester’s first team is one of the strongest in the division and, without significant injuries, a top 6 finish is possible.
