Amid reports from the Daily Mail claiming that Newcastle United are preparing a bid for the Leeds winger, Harrison himself responded to the rumours after the club’s pre-season friendly defeat to Aston Villa, saying: “We’ll see, we’ll see what happens.”
Newcastle are seemingly prepared to offer £20m for the 25-year-old, who the Whites signed permanently for £11m from Manchester City last summer.
The Yorkshire club are looking to more than treble that outlay as they will reportedly seek £35m for his signature, but City will receive 20% of any sale.
McGilligan believes that Harrison has left the door open for potential suitors and fears that he could be enticed into moving on.
Speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, he said:
Will Leeds United finish in the top ten of the Premier League this season?
“The other day against Aston Villa he was asked where his future lies, amid rumours from Tottenham, amid rumours from Newcastle United – he said, ‘we’ll see, we’ll see’, which is really interesting.
“I don’t think any of us have really thought to ourselves, like, we’ve never entertained this with Jack Harrison.
“I think a lot of us were quite surprised by his comments, really.
“Now, ‘we’ll see, we’ll see’, in my opinion, is him being open to a transfer.
“He didn’t shut it down. ‘We’ll see, we’ll see’ is quite eye-opening. So if a big offer does come in for Jack Harrison, he’s almost just saying, ‘look, I’m here. I’ll definitely entertain it, I’ll definitely listen to it’, which is fair enough.”
TIF Thoughts on Harrison and Leeds…
Do you think Harrison will leave Leeds?
Having already lost arguably their two best players in Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, the departure of Harrison could prove quite significant.
It is easy to see why Leeds would play hardball when it comes to a potential deal here given the clientele that have already left Elland Road this summer, but with Harrison’s comments suggesting that he may well be open to a transfer, it could leave the situation out of the club’s control.
