Joe Wainman has claimed that it would make sense for Leeds United to be one of the clubs interested in Josh Wilson-Esbrand this summer.

Leeds are in desperate need of a left-back as Junior Firpo is set to be sidelined for the opening fixtures of the Premier League season due to injury and Leif Davis has just parted ways with the club to join Ipswich Town.

Pep Guardiola is a massive fan of 19-year-old Wilson-Esbrand, having called him ‘excellent’ and ‘aggressive’, which could indicate that the teenager might be staying at Manchester City.

However, Marc Cucurella has been heavily linked with a move to City this summer and Wainman claimed on the JustJoe Football Show YouTube channel that if the Spanish defender does join the Premier League champions, this could change Guardiola’s mind on the youngster’s future.

He said: “It makes sense that we might be one of those Premier League clubs that have also enquired about Josh Wilson-Esbrand.

“Now, of course, Pep said he wants to keep him close, but that may change if Manchester City can agree a deal for Cucurella. Of course, we know Cucurella wants to move to City, City want him to move, but Brighton look to be pricing him out of a move.”

TIF Thoughts on Wainman’s comments…

With Davis recently leaving Leeds, they have no experienced left-backs in the squad currently available, so Jesse Marsch might be keen to pursue Wilson-Esbrand and attempt to lure him to the club on loan this summer.

However, Guardiola being a big fan of him does not bode well for Leeds, and unless Cucurella joins City, it could be unlikely that they will be keen to offload the youngster, especially if he keeps producing impressive performances in pre-season. Therefore, Leeds might have to look elsewhere.
