Connor McGilligan has claimed that Leeds United should opt to bring in Nathaniel Phillips on loan in this summer transfer window.

Nathaniel Phillips spent the second half of last season on loan with Bournemouth in the Championship, and he featured 17 times to help the Cherries gain promotion to the Premier League, but he has since returned to his parent club Liverpool where he has been partaking in pre-season.

Leeds United have recently sent young defender Charlie Cresswell on loan to Millwall where he will spend the 2022/23 season playing in the Championship, so Marsch might be looking to bring in a defender to replace him.

With Phillips recently returning to Liverpool, McGilligan has suggested on the One Leeds Fan YouTube channel that the Whites should go in for him on a loan deal this summer.

(4;56) “I think would be a really good signing, bring him (Nat Phillips) in on loan for 12 months, maybe with an option to buy, but don’t sign him at the end, bring Cresswell back in a seasons time, and Nat Phillips goes back, and Cresswell has played his minutes, he’s ready to be challenging for that first-team spot,” McGilligan said.

TIF Thoughts on McGilligan’s comments…

Leeds may have brought in six new players this summer, but none of them have been central defenders, and with Cresswell leaving the club for next season, Marsch might notice them as short at the back and opt to bring in a new face either on loan or on a permanent deal.

The Whites conceded the second most goals (79) in the entire division last season in the Premier League, so it might have come as a surprise that Marsch has not opted to bring in a new centre back, and with Phillips playing a key role in Bournemouth’s promotion to the top flight last season, he could be a suitable option as a backup.
