Everton: Journalist makes claim on potential signing for Toffees

Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Everton have a chance of signing Armando Broja – but admits there are perhaps more attractive destinations on offer to him this summer.

According to The Athletic, Everton have made Broja their number-one target in this summer transfer window, having only made one addition to their squad so far in the form of James Tarkowski, who joined on a free transfer.

Broja spent last season on loan with Southampton and did relatively well, featuring in 38 games in all competitions while finding the back of the net nine times, which is a solid return for a 19-year-old in his first full top-flight season.

Although Broja is reportedly the main target for Everton this summer, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he might be inclined to join West Ham United instead due to the current buzz around the Hammers squad compared to the Toffees.

He said: “I think that they have a chance, but if you were Broja and you weigh it up beyond Frank Lampard, there’s just not that same sparkle, is there, to go into Everton’s camp right now, compared to if you walk into West Ham’s camp. There’s going to be a very different feel.”

Do you think Everton will sign Broja?

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Jones certainly appears to have been on the money with his claim regarding the potential lure of West Ham, with recent reports since his comments suggesting that he is leaving Chelsea’s pre-season camp to talk with the Hammers over a possible move – so you would imagine Everton’s ‘chance’ is now firmly hanging in the balance.

Everton’s top goalscorer last season in the Premier League was Richarlison with 10 goals, but he recently left the club to sign for Tottenham Hotspur, so Frank Lampard will be on the hunt to find a replacement. And as Broja has one season in the top flight under his belt, the Toffees boss might be hoping to use his Chelsea connections to get a deal over the line from under his former club’s noses.

The Toffees received £60m for Richarlison, so Lampard might be hoping to use some of that money to invest in a new forward, so even though Jones has claimed that he might pick West Ham over Everton, he could outbid the Hammers to secure his signature – but may have to act fast in order to do so.
