ESPN FC pundit Steve Nicol recently slammed Everton for their recent transfer business and claim if they do not change their strategy they will be relegated.
It is no secret that the Toffees have gotten themselves into dire situations both on the field and off it due to the club’s awful transfer record which has seen the club spend around half a billion pounds since 2016.
Despite spending this enormous amount of money, the club have seen themselves fall down the table and into a relegation battle last season which they narrowly escaped. However, Nicol believes the club won’t be so lucky next time if they continue to bring in the type of players they are.
Nicol told ESPN FC, “In the last three, four or five seasons, the amount of players they’ve bought who have turned out to be duds has to end, because if it doesn’t, and they keep doing it, then they will get relegated.”
TIF Thoughts on Nicol’s comments…
It is easy to see why Nicol believes they could face a serious relegation problem if they continue in their ways, they have spent an egregious amount of money and have only gotten worse and worse as the season has gone on.
Some examples of this awful spending include Yannick Bolasie from Crystal Palace for £26m, who only lasted two seasons in the first team. Davy Klaassen, who cost £24.3m and made one assist in 16 games before being shifted off to Ajax, and Cenk Tosun, who cost £20.2m and scored just 11 goals in 61 games for the club.
So far this summer they have lost their star man Richarlison, who was largely key for their survival last season, and have bought in free agent James Tarkowski and signed his former teammate Dwight McNeil, who managed no goals and just one assist in 38 games for Burnley last season.
With the current state of the club and the squad, it looks like they are going to need their players to step up now that Richarlison has gone and maybe a miracle to not be involved in a relegation scrap this season.
