Journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is searching for a new striker this summer – and has tipped Danny Ings to potentially suffer as a result.

Aston Villa have already made five new signings since the end of last season, with Diego Carlos, Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara, Robin Olsen and Ludwig Augustinsson coming in for a combined total of £49.5m – with the latter arriving on loan.

Ings signed for Villa at the start of last season from fellow Premier League side Southampton but failed to make an impact after featuring 30 times in the league and netting just seven times.

With Ings not having the expected impact at Villa Park, Crook spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that Gerrard is going to be on the hunt for a new forward, which could have an effect on the game time of the English striker.

He said: “They got a lot of business done early and then it’s gone a bit quiet. They were obviously linked with Luis Suarez. So, I think Gerrard is scouring the market and that would probably have a knock-on effect with Danny Ings.”

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

Villa have made some promising signings this summer, but four out of the five arrivals have been defensive options, and with Coutinho already being at the club for the second half of last season, there have been no fresh attacking options added to the side, so it could be expected that Gerrard will opt to bring in another attacker before the end of the window.

There have been reports stating that Alfredo Morelos has been linked with a move to Villa Park this summer, and with Gerrard previously working with the Colombian forward at Rangers, this could make the deal a relatively easy one to be agreed – but this could mean that Ings might be shown the door after a disappointing season last term, so we agree with Crook that his time at Villa could come to a premature end.
