Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Douglas Luiz will wait before signing a new Aston Villa contract as he considers his options.
It was recently reported by The Telegraph, that the Villains are in talks over a new deal and they are trying to extend his current terms that run until next summer 2023.
While speaking about the situation on the Que Golazo podcast, Romano was able to confirm these latest reports, saying Steven Gerrard is ‘super happy’ with the midfielder. However, he did at that the player won’t commit his future to the club just yet.
The journalist explained his understanding of things, saying: “Yes, they’re trying. This is true. They’re trying to extend his contract. He was very good in pre-season. Steven Gerrard is super happy with him. So he is a player that they want to keep.
“They’re offering him a new deal, but he has not accepted yet because Douglas Luiz from what I’m told will wait a bit before signing any deal with Villa.
“He wants to understand if he can have some opportunity next summer on a free. so I think it will take some time.”
TIF thoughts on Douglas Luiz and Aston Villa…
Luiz has played over 30 Premier League games in each of the past three seasons, so it’s clear that he is an integral part of the set-up at Aston Villa – and this hasn’t changed under manager Gerrard.
Will Douglas Luiz sign a new Aston Villa contract?
Yes
No
Even so, unsurprisingly, with that sort of consistency, the Brazilian has drawn some transfer interest – especially with his contract entering its final year. Indeed, Serie A outfit AC Milan were said (by GOAL earlier on in July) to be in talks to sign the midfielder with Villa looking for a €30m (£26m) fee.
Taking everything into account, it’s certainly not bad news for Villa fans that he is wanted by the club and talks are taking place over a new deal. Still, they will have every right to be a little concerned if the situation continues to drag for much longer as Luiz weighs up his options.
