Journalist Josh Holland has given Aston Villa a boost after saying that Mauro Icardi could now leave his current club following Paris Saint-Germain’s signing of Hugo Ekitike.

Villa signed Danny Ings at the start of last season, but the transfer has not quite gone to plan, as he only managed to find the back of the net seven times in 30 league games last term.

Due to Ings’ lack of form, Steven Gerrard may well be on the hunt for another forward this summer, and Icardi is one of several players at Paris Saint-Germain that has been put on the transfer list by the club this transfer window.

PSG have recently signed Ekitike, and Holland spoke to GiveMeSport, claiming that this means that Icardi could become a viable target for Villa.

He said: “I’m thinking now PSG have signed Ekitike, that could maybe pave the way for Icardi, who’s obviously been linked with a move away.”

TIF Thoughts on Holland’s comments…

Icardi was out of favour for PSG last term after he only started 10 times in Ligue 1, scoring just four goals, however, given the strength of the regular front three, it was not necessarily down to Icardi being out of form that he was not being picked.

With Icardi not featuring heavily for PSG last season, he might be keen to leave the club to join a team where he knows he will play regular football, so if Gerrard can offer him that at Villa, it might be a deal that they can get over the line.

Although there have been no direct links of a move to Villa for Icardi this summer, Gerrard will be fully aware that he has been put on the list of players that can leave by PSG, so this might spark interest from the Premier League club.
