Steven Gerrard “really wants” to bring a ‘typical eight’ to Aston Villa this summer.

Having been Europe’s sixth-biggest spenders in January, the Liverpool legend wasted no time in bolstering his squad further this summer.

Just a day after the Premier League season finished the west Midlanders swooped to bring in midfielder Boubacar Kamara from Marseille.

Diego Carlos, Robin Olsen, Philippe Coutinho on a permanent deal and Ludwig Ausgustinsson have all followed but Gerrard still feels he needs a box-to-box addition in the centre of his midfield.

Journalist Ashley Preece recently revealed that the ex-Rangers manager wants to have ‘fierce competition’ in his squad among his options in the middle of the pitch and Jones has now claimed that is where the club are most likely to strengthen before the window closes.

Speaking on the Chasing Green Arrows YouTube channel on Friday evening, when asked about the possibility of a centre-forward arriving at Villa Park he said:

(22:30)”Not heard anything on a striker. If anything I was told the other day a number eight is the one thing that Gerrard now really wants, like he wants a typical eight.”

TIF Thoughts on Aston Villa’s midfield…

Do you think Steven Gerrard has improved Aston Villa?

While Kamara will likely be deployed at the base of the central trio and newly-elected captain John McGinn taking up a position just in front, who plays alongside is perhaps still up for debate.

Jacob Ramsey was the most used player as the second no.8 last term and flourished as he finished as the club’s third-highest goalscorer with six goals.

However, the £22.5m-rated ace just turned 21 back in May and Gerrard may be looking to bring in someone for the here and now but it does remain to be seen if his desires are fulfilled.
