Journalist Charles Watts has claimed that Arsenal must sell players like Lucas Torreira to offset the spend on recent transfers.

The Gunners have already spent an initial £30m on Fabio Vieira this summer, while further deals for the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Lisandro Martinez, and others could follow (via The Athletic).

However, they will likely aim to sell a few unwanted squad members in the coming weeks to help balance the books. Torreira could be one such player, and Watts has warned that his future could be ‘key’ to keeping the more club financially sustainable.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, the journalist said (13:54): “They’re spending money, there’s no doubt about it. But they need to recoup that.

“Especially when you think the spent £150m odd last summer as well. You’ve got to trade well, you’ve got to sell players well.

“Arsenal have not done it well in the past, they need to do it well now. And shifting the likes of Torreira is absolutely key to that.”

TIF Thoughts on Lucas Torreira and Arsenal…

As Watts mentions, Arsenal spent heavily last summer when the signed the likes of Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, Martin Odegaard, and others. However, many big name players – such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – have left for free in the recent past.

Naturally, this sort of transfer activity could jeopardise the club in the long term due to a lack of sustainability, while also leaving them at risk of of falling foul of Financial Fair Play rules.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, the possible sale of Torreira to Fiorentina fell through not that long ago, ruining the club’s chance to net some extra cash.

However, if the club can end up making the €15m (£13m) they want for the player, this could be a big step in the right direction.
