While speaking on The Roar podcast, Phil Smith has claimed Sunderland need to sign a new striker.

One of the biggest success stories of last season for Sunderland was striker Ross Stewart, who managed to adapt to the third tier of English football very well, despite having spent all of his career north of the border.

Stewart managed to net 29 goals across all competitions which helped fire the Black Cats back into the Championship, although that has seen SPFL giants Rangers reportedly show an interest in the striker.

But even if he wasn’t to depart, Smith believes another attacking player is required and has urged Alex Neil to recruit a new striker this summer.

“I think that’s the one position where I’m looking at it thinking, you could end up in a lot of trouble here very quickly if you don’t get it right. So definitely the striker situation’s a big one for me.”

TIF Thoughts on Sunderland’s striker situation…

The Black Cats are in a rather fortuitous situation in the sense of already having a striker capable of finding the back of the net in England within their ranks in the form of Stewart, however, they are just one injury to the Scotland international away from being left very thin on the ground.

This current PL centre-back almost signed for Sunderland back in 2015.

Last season, they had youngster Nathan Broadhead on loan from Everton and it’s been reported that Sunderland are once again interested in a loan move for the striker, which would add some depth and competition at the centre-forward position, so it does seem as though there is movement behind the scenes.
