Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has been left excited as Sunderland announced the new signing of Ellis Simms.

The Black Cats have just completed a loan signing for the young Everton forward which will see him spend the upcoming season at the Stadium of Light.

Simms follows the likes of Daniel Ballard, Jack Clarke and Aji Alese through the door at Sunderland this summer as they prepare for life back in the Championship and should be available to make his debut in the season-opener against Coventry City this Sunday.

Upon hearing the latest transfer news, Downie took to Twitter to say that it should be a fine signing and is just what the club need in order to have someone keeping up top with Ross Stewart.

He explained: “Having watched him a fair amount at my team Hearts last season, this is exactly what Sunderland need to compete with Ross Stewart. Good signing!”

TIF thoughts on Ellis Simms and Sunderland…

Simms has spent the last couple of seasons at on loan at both Hearts and Blackpool so he should be familiar with joining a new club only on a temporary basis.

The 21-year-old scored seven goals during his time in Scotland last term which may explain why Downie is so positive about this move to Sunderland.

Playing up top for the Black Cats in League One, Stewart netted an impressive 26 goals across all competitions. With that in mind, Simms could certainly come in and help shoulder some of the goalscoring burden in the upcoming Championship season.
