Tottenham Hotspur do have Clement Lenglet on their radar this summer as Antonio Conte looks to add a new centre-back to his squad.

This has been suggested by the reliable Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold who was discussing the Barcelona man on his latest YouTube video.

It is apparent the main target on Fabio Paratici’s list this summer at centre-back is Alessandro Bastoni, with Josko Gvardiol coming in at number two.

However, there have been strong reports emerging in recent days suggesting an agreement between Spurs and Barcelona is edging ever closer.

Lenglet currently has four years remaining on his current deal at the Camp Nou but Gold believes he is an option for Spurs this summer:

“And then there’s one that’s, and he is on this list, who caused a little bit of people complaining this week and that is, I’m hopefully not gonna murder the pronunciation of this, Clement Lenglet.”

“I understand, Spurs tried to sign him on loan last summer. And that was turned down by the player. The player didn’t want to leave Barcelona at that point. He’s played 27 times for Barcelona last season, started four games in the Champions League. There’s talk because there are financial problems that he’ll be available on a loan deal, potentially a two-year loan deal has been spoken about.”

“People [fans] absolutely saying he’s the worst defender in the world ever. I think there’s an element of, he’s not Bastoni. And I think that’s what comes into play when people talk about this sort of stuff. He’s a good player, you know, he’s a France international as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

It is apparent Gold has picked up on the negative reaction the reports covering this possibility has attracted on social media among Spurs fans.

Do you want Lenglet at Spurs?

Yes

Yes

No

No

The 26-year-old was not a regular for Barca in the 2021/22 campaign with 21 La Liga appearances in which provided the Frenchman seven starts (via Transfermarkt).

However, it must be remembered, that Paratici is said to hold a long shortlist of players in each position and Gold has suggested Lenglet is behind the likes of Bastoni, Gvardiol and Geison Bremer.

Do I want him at Spurs? I hear that arsenal are going after him and I would gladly pay a months wages towards him going to arsenal if it meant they signed him instead!!! That’s how much I want him at Spurs!!

As usual, fans who get their football knowledge from The Beano and Barry down the pub know more than Conte and Paratici do about quality defenders. Getting their opinion is about as much use as asking me about nuclear physics. They are the same fans who moaned about signing ‘Juventus flops’ Bentancur and Kulushevski.
