Rangers Review writer and journalist Jonny McFarlane has been speaking about Calvin Bassey’s deleted Instagram post that hinted at an Ibrox departure.

On Monday morning, the left-sided Gers defender posted on his Instagram Story, just prior to embarking on international duty with Nigeria, and caused confusion as the picture located him at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ training ground, as detailed by Derek Clark of the Rangers Review here.

The 22-year-old is thought to be attracting interest from a number of Premier League and Bundesliga clubs, including Aston Villa – where Steven Gerrard reigns, having brought the versatile defender to Ibrox.

Nonetheless, McFarlane has played down the rumours of any move to Wolves – although he isn’t against the idea of selling Bassey.

He said: “It seems to me quite obvious that Calvin Bassey didn’t post that, you know, an hour before he started an international game. I think his focus might have been elsewhere.

“It might have been an error, it might not have been an error, it might have been the wrong time, who knows?

“If Wolves come in for Calvin Bassey, great. They’ll either offer the right amount of money and Rangers will do really well, or they’ll not and he’ll stay and Rangers have got a terrific player.”

Do you think Rangers can win the SPL next season?

Sky Sports has previously revealed that the Light Blues will seek in excess of £25m for the 3-cap Nigeria international, and given that their current transfer record fee received stands at £16m, that sum of money could work wonders for Giovanni van Bronckhorst when it comes to refreshing his side.

It could fund a major reshuffle at the Light Blues, with first-team stars Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos all heading into the final year of their contracts, meaning attacking reinforcements will be needed sooner rather than later – so perhaps putting himself in the shop window with his performances (as well as social media posts) isn’t bad marketing for Rangers.
