Sky Sports contributor Joshua Barrie has hailed Rangers for holding onto Connor Goldson.

The centre-back’s future had been thrown into doubt as his contract expired on 31st May, and just a day later, Football League World reported that Nottingham Forest were interested in taking the 29-year-old on a free transfer to the English Premier League.

However, the Ibrox club announced that Goldson had signed a four-year deal in a quick turn of events, with John Souttar also on his way to Glasgow as the duo can look to form a formidable pairing in the heart of the Rangers defence as the Light Blues look to regain the Scottish Premiership title.

The towering defender started in all but two of the Teddy Bears’ 38 league games this season and played a vital role at the back as the club reached the Europa League final.

His decision to stay with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men will be a relief to the manager – and it has also sparked an elated response from The Rangers Review man Barrie.

Taking to Twitter, he said: “Wow. Don’t think many people saw this one coming!

“This is an excellent piece of business. Would’ve been very hard to replace everything Goldson brings (durability/distribution/flexibility) without spending a fair amount.”

TIF Thoughts on Goldson and Rangers…

With two colossal centre-backs now at hand, Van Bronckhorst can focus his attention elsewhere on the pitch in terms of strengthening.

There is the lingering issue of having Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo all with just 12 months remaining on their contracts, so tying those players down will no doubt be something that the club will be looking at – or perhaps they will decide to cash in as they seek to wrest the league title back from Old Firm rivals Celtic by freshening up the squad.

Goldson has made 223 appearances for the Gers since arriving in 2018 and his experience will be pivotal alongside Steven Davis, who has also signed a one-year extension. With the foundations now in place, it will be interesting to see how the Dutchman goes about his business as he prepares a team fit to challenge in his first full season in the Rangers dugout.
