Adam Thornton believes that Rangers should accept £25m for Calvin Bassey this summer.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough year at Ibrox which culminated in an ‘incredible performance’ in the Europa League final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt as described by pundit Don Hutchinson who labelled the Nigerian ‘a giant, a superstar’ for his display.

It is thought that the left-sided defender has attracted interest from the man who brought him to Glasgow, Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa with the former Leicester City player apparently a ‘key target’ for the west Midlanders.

The report states that the Gers will ask for a club-record £25m for Bassey and Thornton believes that if an offer of that nature comes in the club should accept it.

Should Rangers cash in on Bassey?

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel, he said: “I don’t think Rangers should be entertaining anything under £25m, absolutely not. But if that figure gets hit with a sell-on, then I think he needs to go from a financial point of view and we reinvest that money back into the team.

“That might be where we see a rebuild coming in the sense that we can maybe improve on a couple of our positions.”

How well do you remember where Rangers' signings came in from down the years? Take our quiz to find out! First up, Carlos Pena was the Gers' most expensive arrival during the summer of 2017, but where did he join from?

In January, the Light Blues received their biggest transfer fee to date when they sold Nathan Patterson to Everton in a deal worth up to £16m, which just goes to show how far a £25m sum could go for the Gers if they were to let the Nigerian international leave.

It could fund a major reshuffle with first-team stars Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos all heading into the final year of their contracts.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is preparing a side ahead of his first full season in charge of the Teddy Bears and he could have a major rebuild on his hands with big-name stars in such precarious positions but he should at least have the finances to construct the team the way he wants it and we should see updates regarding the situation at Ibrox once the international window draws to a close.

  • Paul says:

It was only a few months ago Bassey was getting torn apart by Ross County.

He’s been in good form at the tail end of the season, but he’s far from a £25m player. His effort is 100%, but he makes too many basic mistakes.

Another fantasy valuation that will result in Bassey staying at Rangers until his contract runs out and leaves for free.
