Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that it will probably be impossible for Rangers to keep Calvin Bassey with the transfer window about to open.

Bassey has been a mainstay in the Rangers side this season, making 50 appearances in all competitions this season, compared to last campaign, when he featured just 15 times – eight of which were in the Scottish Premiership.

After Bassey’s breakthrough season this term, there have been reports that English Premier League outfit Aston Villa are keen to bring the talented youngster to Villa Park in the summer, with Steven Gerrard having previously worked with the 22-year-old during his time in Scotland.

Due to the impressive season that Bassey has had for the Gers, Jones highlighted to GiveMeSport that it might be impossible to keep him for next season.

He said: “It’s so difficult for them with Calvin Bassey, it seems like it’ll probably be impossible to keep him. He’s burst through at a moment when the transfer window is about to open, and he has played the game of his life in the last game of the season, pretty much.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Bassey has had an impressive season for Rangers. In the Scottish Premiership, he had an average of 52.3 accurate passes, 2.3 accurate long balls and 1.5 tackles per game – while these were all areas the defender ranked in the top five for his side, as per SofaScore.

However, after coming through the Leicester City academy, his desire may be to return to England, so if a club such as Aston Villa come calling in the summer, he might be inclined to make the switch to the Premier League.

Rangers fell short in the Scottish Premiership and narrowly in the Europa League, so Giovanni van Bronckhorst might be looking to make changes both in and out of the club in his first summer transfer window as Rangers boss, and if a significant fee comes in for Bassey, he may be open to accepting the offer if it will allow him to replenish his squad to the level he desires.
