Journalist Pete O’Rourke has revealed Rangers have ‘increased hope’ of signing Aston Villa’s starlet striker Cameron Archer and they believe their relationship with former manager Steven Gerrard can aid this deal.

The Gers are looking to continue their rebuild under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and as a result, could be turning to their former manager Gerrard in order to help their efforts to challenge bitter rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premier League title next season.

Rangers are now looking at bringing in Villa’s 20-year-old striker Archer to the Ibrox next season, and according to O’Rourke, the club believes their existing relationship with their former manager could put them in the lead to secure his signature.

O’Rourke told GiveMeSport, “It would definitely give them maybe increased hope that they could agree a deal between both clubs.

“There will be a relationship obviously between Gerrard and Rangers, so maybe he might be more inclined to send Cameron Archer up to Ibrox if it does come down to that, knowing what Rangers can offer the striker as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Archer to Rangers…

It is unsure whether or not Gerrard is going to want to loan out Archer as it has been reported by The Athletic that the Villa manager is going to assess his options during the club’s pre-season and he will make a decision on this development.

Archer impressed last season both at Villa and during his loan spell at Championship club Preston North End. Across both teams and all competitions, he bagged 11 goals and one assist in 26 appearances while averaging 2.2 shots, 0.7 key passes, and 0.9 dribbles with 80.7% passing accuracy on 12.4 average passes per game. The ‘fantastic’ English forward could be a great addition for Rangers next season, while he is still young and fairly unproven at the top level, he garnered high praise last season. Sky Sport’s Clinton Morrison hailed the player as ‘outstanding’ and a great part of his game is that ‘he always shifts it, he wants to have a shot’. Having a relationship with Gerrard will certainly help their chances to bring in a talented youngster, but they will have to wait and see for now.
