67 Hail Hail podcaster Hamish Carton has raised doubts over the future of teenager Karamoko Dembele at Celtic.

Dembele featured for Celtic’s Under-20s when he was just 13 years old and made his first-team debut in 2019 for the Hoops but now at 19, the teenager’s career appears in limbo with his contract expiring.

He was sidelined until February having fractured his ankle in a pre-season friendly with Bristol City, but only played 20 minutes under Ange Postecoglou this term and made the squad on just five occasions.

With no apparent fitness concerns, it is quite alarming to see such an “exceptional” player – as Alison McConnell described him – left out in the cold, and given his lack of opportunities this season, Carton is of the impression that Dembele could well be moved on this summer.

Speaking on the 67 Hail Hail podcast, he said: “I always think that’s pretty telling with Ange.

“Ange would never come out and really slag a player off publicly, but I always think that when they’re not making the matchday squad and they’re fully fit – which we assume Dembele was – then there’s something up there, and the minute a player isn’t fully committed, they no longer feature under Ange.

“So we will see what happens with Dembele. I would reckon that he’s probably going to leave this summer, which would be a shame.”

TIF Thoughts on Dembele…

Since he burst onto the scene and made his senior debut, Dembele has struggled to live up to the hype – and fitness issues haven’t helped.

Will Celtic win the SPL next season?

Yes

No

No

He has only featured 10 times across four seasons and has missed 230 days through injury, but perhaps the Lennoxtown officials could be willing to give him another chance with an extension.

French newspaper L’Equipe has marvelled at his ‘extraordinary acceleration’ and one-on-one abilities, and with such a talent on their hands, perhaps the Bhoys would be wise to hang on to the London-born winger and not rue the day they let him leave for nothing.
