Journalist Anthony Joseph has claimed that Celtic would like a defensive midfielder this summer, with Nir Bitton parting ways from the club.

It was announced that Nir Bitton would be leaving Celtic at the end of the season following his contract expiring, he made 271 appearances in total for the Hoops after he signed in 2013, so Ange Postecoglou might be keen to try and replace him before the new season starts.

Postecoglou has already acquired 17 new faces since his introduction at the start of last season, and with Celtic qualifying for the Champions League after winning the Scottish Premiership, he will most likely look to bring in more players this summer.

With Nir Bitton parting ways after such a lengthy period at the club, Joseph has claimed to GiveMeSport that Postecoglou will be keen to bring in a new midfielder to the club before the season starts.

“They would like a defensive midfielder with the fact that Bitton is leaving.

“But don’t forget that they’ve got Ideguchi, who didn’t really play too much last season. They didn’t bring him in for no reason, and I presume they would expect him to feature more,” Joseph said.

TIF Thoughts on Joseph’s comments…

With Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton both leaving Celtic at the end of the season, it is likely that Postecoglou will want to bring in at least one new midfielder in the upcoming months of the transfer window, especially with his side qualifying for the Champions League.

Celtic struggled in European competitions last season, they were devastatingly knocked out of the UEFA Europa Conference League when they lost to Bodo/Glimt, which would have been enough for Postecoglou to realise that his squad will need upgrading ahead of next season if they want to stand a chance of competing in the luxurious Champions League.
