A Celtic State of Mind’s Patrick McGilp believes that star Benfica youngster Jota should sign for Celtic very soon after the player returns from an extended summer break.

Celtic got back to their winning ways last season under boss Ange Postecoglou and a big reason for this was their impressive work in the transfer window, which saw Jota join from his Portuguese side on a season-long loan.

Since their impressive season finished they have been linked with a permanent move for the Portuguese winger and McGilp now believes the deal will be done very soon, as there have been a number of reports stating so.

He said on A Celtic State of Mind podcast, “I think all signs point to Jota signing. Every report said he’s signings today, he signs tomorrow, signs next week, it’s a done deal, it’s a four-year deal, fees agreed. I expect him to sign.

“I think it’s just been a case of he’s going to have a wee extended break then back for preseason season. I’m slightly concerned he never reported back in for preseason, but maybe he’s just had an extra couple of days off. I think he was at the Benfica training camp wasn’t he, saying goodbye to a few people.” (45:12)

Interesting first question, how many Celtic fans were inside Ibrox?

TIF Thoughts on Jota to Celtic…

The 23-year-old impressed during his loan and became a fan favourite during their return to the top of the Scottish Premier League, beating out bitter rivals Rangers in the process.

During the season he racked up 27 goals and assists with 13 goals and 14 assists for the Bhoys, he also averaged 2.7 shots, two key passes, 1.7 dribbles, 1.2 tackles, and 1.9 crosses with 83.2% passing accuracy with 35 average passes per game. (Whoscored)

It is understood that the Scottish giants could be paying around just £6.5 million for his services on a permanent basis, which is an incredibly low fee for a player who racked up the tally of goals and assists that Jota did. While he helped their resurgence to the top of the SPL last season, this deal could ensure he helps the Hoops retain that status for years to come.

If I hear another speculative report on Jota before he actually signs I swear I’ll explode. People have been spinning the same garbage for weeks. It like a stopped clock, if you keep saying everyday he’s going to sign you’ll eventually get it right. Unless he does an Eddie Howe in which all you your “signing soon” gibberish will have proven to be just that.
