It has been claimed Wolves could acquire 20-year-old Barcelona prospect Nico Gonzalez in a possible deal which would involve Ruben Neves going the offer way this summer.
Wolves are looking to bolster their squad this summer with transfer links to Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino and Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Palhinha after they finished the 21/22 Premier League season poorly after an initially great season under Bruno Lage.
One big rumour surrounding the club so far this summer has been regarding the possible exit of star and key man Ruben Neves, who has garnered interest from the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, and Barcelona. The Midlands side has slapped a huge £70 million price tag on the 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder, but they could end up receiving a lesser fee with a player coming to them in the deal as well.
ExWHUemployee spoke about the rumour on The Transfer Show podcast this week and believes that despite Barcelona rating the 20-year-old, they could use him as a sweetener as he is a very good and technical midfielder.
He said: “One player from Barcelona that could possibly come in exchange is a guy called Nico Gonzalez, who’s a 20-year-old, and apparently, Barcelona do rate him. But obviously, they could use him as a sweetener to get Wolves to sell him to them. He’s meant to be a decent, promising young midfielder for Barcelona, very technical as you’d expect of anyone from Barcelona.”

If Wolves are to sell Neves this summer getting a decent price and a player of Gonzalez’s promise in return for him could be a good return for the club. They have a couple of strong midfielders still at the club in Joao Moutinho and Leandro Dendoncker, but their attack is so poor so using the money to bolster their attack and Gonzalez coming in to replace Neves could be the best deal for the side.
While Neves is a key man for them and Gonzalez isn’t guaranteed to replace him directly, he did have a good season for Barcelona last year. In his 34 games across all competitions, he managed two goals and one assist while averaging 1.4 dribbles, 0.6 key passes, 1.1 tackles, and 0.6 shots per game with an impressive 89.9% pass accuracy on 26.7 average passes per game (WhoScored).
Wolves have a big decision to make this summer, do they sell neves for the most he has ever been worth and reinvest in the squad while acquiring a young talent like Gonzalez, or do they keep Neves and risk missing out on a huge payday for the midfielder?
