Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Gabriel Barbosa is someone who Wolves are interested in, but other clubs might have the upper hand.

There have been reports stating that Wolves are set to have talks with Flamengo as they are interested in luring Gabriel Barbosa away from the Brazilian club.

However, it is also thought that fellow Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also interested in him.

Barbosa was in fine goalscoring form last season for Flamengo, as he featured 33 times in all competitions and scored an impressive 17 goals, chipping in with two assists.

With several clubs being interested in Barbosa, Jones claimed to GiveMeSport that Wolves might be low down the pecking order in their attempts to sign him.

He said: “Gabigol is definitely on the agenda at Wolves but I’m slightly sceptical about him going there – I get the impression this might be leverage for other teams to come in.

“But he does want to come to the Premier League, he is affordable and Wolves are interested.”

TIF Thoughts on Dean Jones’ comments…

Wolves had a mixed season last term in the Premier League, as they struggled immensely in front of goal – their top scorer was Raul Jimenez with six goals – which was the lowest-scoring top scorer in the entire division. They also had the worst goalscoring record out of the teams that remained in the top flight after scoring just 38 goals.

It is clear that Wolves need to bring in a new striker, and the £23.4m-rated Barbosa could be a good option for Bruno Lage after he has proven himself in his homeland, while he is just 25 years old, so still has plenty of time left in his career.

However, other clubs such as Newcastle are interested in him, and they would be able to offer the Brazilian more money, so Wolves might find it difficult to compete with other clubs in their attempts to sign him as Jones suggests.
