According to journalist Ryan Taylor, Wolves are looking to smash their club transfer record this summer with a move for Sporting Lisbon’s midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The big news surrounding Wolves this summer is whether or not star man Ruben Neves is set to leave this club this summer, with interest from fellow Premier League clubs, Manchester United and Arsenal. As a result of the uncertainty, the midlands club have been linked with a number of midfielders in order to replace the Portugal international.

Most recently, it would appear that Bruno Lage’s men are looking to move for Sporting Lisbon’s Nunes, with Taylor claiming the club are ready to smash their club transfer record in order to bring the midfielder to the club this summer.

He said, “I don’t think he’s going to angle for a move, but Wolves are certainly exploring a deal at the moment. I believe, if it was to materialise, it would smash the club’s record signing… I think upwards of £40 million would be enough to get a deal done with Sporting. There are talks in Portugal at the moment that Wolves would be willing to offer £40 million, plus £5 million in add-ons.” (5:16)

TIF Thoughts on Taylor’s comments…

If Wolves lose their star man Neves this summer they will have a huge hole in the midfield that will need to be filled as soon as possible, otherwise, they face failing to capitalise on their improved form under Lage.

Last season Nunes picked up three goals and four assists last season with 13 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 2.3 dribbles, and 2.3 long balls per game with 85.!% passing accuracy. He also ranked in the 99th percentile for assists and dribbles completed and the 82nd for pressures per game among midfielders in the top five leagues in Europe.

Nunes, who has been described as ‘unbelievable’, would be a great replacement for Neves, and even if they do not sell their star man he would make a great partner in the engine room for them under Lage. Either way smashing your transfer record for him will help improve the squad.
