Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that there is definite interest in James Ward-Prowse from West Ham United this summer.

West Ham boss David Moyes is reportedly a massive fan of the midfielder and the Scottish manager is debating whether to make an offer to Southampton for their star midfielder, as it was only in August that he signed a new deal with the club.

Ward-Prowse was impressive for Southampton last season, as he was the club’s top scorer with 10 goals in the Premier League and also contributed with five assists.

Despite West Ham being interested in the England international, Jones claimed to GiveMeSport that the transfer does not look particularly likely.

He said: “There is definite interest in James Ward-Prowse, but it’s not particularly likely.

“Saints just don’t want to let this guy go and, when that’s the case, you’ve got to pay over the odds to get them out of that club. You don’t normally see West Ham actually doing that. You hear of them entertaining the idea and you hear of them chasing these players, but then they suddenly look elsewhere and sign somebody else for a third of the price.

“There’s no doubt that they like James Ward-Prowse, but I’m not sure that, at this moment in time, they see it as a signing that they’re getting excited about.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

West Ham finished in a Europa League spot in the 2020/21 season, but last season failed to qualify for the competition and have to settle for the Europa Conference League next term, so Moyes will be keen to bring in some new talent in the summer to hopefully get back into the Europa League.

Ward-Prowse would be a great option for the Hammers and we can see exactly why they are interested, as he has proven that he can score goals from midfield – particularly from set pieces. However, it does not look likely that he will leave Southampton after he signed a new deal with the club less than a year ago, and considering West Ham’s record signing is some £30m less than the Saints ace’s reported price tag, Jones is probably correct to play down the links.
