Insider ExWHUemployee has claimed that West Ham United’s decision to appoint Mark Warburton as first-team assistant coach came as a surprise to players and staff.
Earlier this week, the Hammers announced that the former Brentford, Rangers, Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers manager would now be joining David Moyes as part of his senior coaching team.
However, while speaking on The West Ham Way Patreon, Ex explained that that Warburton had been in talks to become Birmingham City manager, leaving those connected to the Premier League club a little taken aback when it became clear that the 59-year-old would end up with them instead.
The club insider outlined his understanding of the situation, saying: “Warburton was involved in talks to become Birmingham City manager and David Sullivan had been financially supporting the take over of his former club, by Laurence Bassini, and had therefore spoke to Mark Warburton during the process.
“The actual take over seems to be struggling to get over the line which left Warburton in limbo. David Sullivan offered Warburton, as a replacement for Stuart Pearce to Moyes, and as a result the deal was wrapped up quickly after Moyes’ approval.
“The news came as a bit of a surprise to current staff and players as it happened quickly after the move to Birmingham fell through.”
