Journalist Paul Brown has claimed that Lautaro Martinez is someone who has been on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur for a long time.
Martinez was in fine form for Inter last season, as he was the club’s top scorer with 21 goals in Serie A. The Argentinian striker has now netted 74 times and made 24 assists in 181 games for the Italian side.
With Tottenham showing repeated interest in Martinez, Brown has claimed to GiveMeSport that if he did become available, he would be Antonio Conte’s first choice to add to his frontline options.
He said: “I still think Spurs would love to have Lautaro Martinez, who is someone who’s been on their radar for a long time, but he would obviously be massively expensive and doesn’t look like he’s going to move, but he would be their first choice.”
TIF Thoughts on Brown’s comments…
Conte will know Martinez from his time at Inter, so will be well aware of his capabilities, and with him reportedly lining up a £78m bid for him, it is clear how highly the Italian coach rates him.
He wouldn’t be the only one who thinks highly of Martinez, as international teammate Lionel Messi has previously labelled him as a ‘spectacular’ player.
Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League last term which means that they have qualified for the Champions League ahead of next season, and with Martinez featuring in the competition over the past four years, he could add important experience in the competition that the squad may need.
However, Inter might be reluctant to let one of their key players leave in the summer, especially as he is still just 24 years old and has four years remaining on his contract, so he still has time to improve, at which point, the Italian giants could sell him for a larger fee in years to come.
