Journalist Michael Bridge has claimed that Djed Spence would like to join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window rather than Nottingham Forest.
Tottenham have reportedly agreed on a deal to sign Spence from Middlesbrough, but there is still interest from Forest, where Spence spent last season on loan as they got promoted to the Premier League.
Spence was impressive for Forest last season, making 46 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, and was named in the Championship Team of the Season as he played a vital role when Forest won the play-offs to secure top-flight status for the upcoming season.
With Spence being linked with a move to Spurs, Bridge claimed to GiveMeSport that he would personally prefer to join the north London club over any of the other sides interested.
He said: “My understanding, I think Nottingham Forest, the other interested side, there might have been one or two more, I’ve been given the indication that Spence would like to join Spurs.
“I do think him being away with the Under-21s has delayed it a little bit, and it might even be delayed a little bit longer because I think he’s going to go on holiday straight away. I don’t know that for certain, but I think he will be going away.”
Do you think Spence gets in the Spurs starting XI?
TIF Thoughts on Bridge’s comments…
Interestingly, Arsenal legend Ian Wright called the right-back ‘swashbuckling’ for his performance against Arsenal in the FA Cup last season.
Spurs will need to bring in new talent in the summer to strengthen certain areas of the pitch as they qualified for the Champions League. Spence is a 21-year-old wing-back who has plenty of time to develop as a player, and learning from Antonio Conte would be great for his progression.
However, if he was to join Spurs, it is not guaranteed that he will have a place in the starting XI, and after the impressive season he had last term, he might be inclined to sign for Spurs and head on loan to get regular game time, or even join another club where he knows he will be a starter.
