Reported Tottenham Hotspur target James Ward-Prowse is expected to remain at his current club this summer despite the latest transfer speculation.

This has been suggested by transfer insider Dean Jones, who has been speaking on the latest edition of Touchline Talk.

Spurs have been linked with the Southampton midfielder ahead of the summer window, with the north London club believed to have put Harry Winks up for sale.

It is thought that Antonio Conte is going into the summer window with an eye on bringing in a new central midfielder, with John McGinn also linked with the Lilywhites.

Spurs have a clear lack of goals coming from their midfield options, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg only providing three goals this season. However, Jones feels a move for Ward-Prowse is unlikely this summer.

Jones said: “He’s been loyal to Southampton. I think he does still enjoy it there, I think he likes being the star and he knows that it can be a risk to go elsewhere.

“But for the club, too, they’ve been loyal to him.

“I do expect him to stay. My hunch is that he will stay, but let’s see what happens – if a big offer lands, it will be interesting to see who flinches.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Ward-Prowse, who has been described as ‘unbelievable’ by Oriol Romeu, has become one of the most highly regarded English midfielders currently in the Premier League, and goes into the window on the back of another impressive campaign.

Over the course of the 2021/22 season, Ward-Prowse provided 10 goals and five assists in the top flight as he topped Southampton’s scoring charts.

However, with a huge £75m fee put on the 27-year-old’s head by the Saints, it is hard to imagine any club would be willing to stump up that kind of money when there are players of Christian Eriksen’s calibre available on a free.
