Tottenham Hotspur could potentially look at Ben Brereton Diaz as an option this summer to fulfil their backup striker needs.
This has been suggested by reliable journalist Alasdair Gold, who was discussing the latest Spurs transfer news on his YouTube channel.
Spurs have gone into the summer window with a backup for Harry Kane believed to be high up on Antonio Conte’s wishlist.
23-year-old Brereton Diaz had an impressive 2021/22 campaign in the Championship, with 23 goals in 37 appearances for Blackburn Rovers (via Transfermarkt).
However, he does not have any experience in the Premier League as of yet, but Gold believes it is an option Spurs may well keep tabs on this summer.
He said: “This is an interesting one, I heard a little bit of talk about Spurs having a little bit of interest in Blackburn’s Ben Brereton Diaz. He’s a 23-year-old striker, if you’re not aware of him.
“I should stress, that from what I understand, I don’t think there’s been any contact with his camp in a few months, I’m talking about more historic interest. But I just wonder whether that gets resurrected this summer or not.”
TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…
This would certainly be an interesting move from Spurs given some of the players who are being linked as a potential option to provide Kane with that much-needed backup.
Would Brereton Diaz be an underwhelming addition?
One name which is once again being linked with a potential move to north London is Inter striker Lautaro Martinez, with a possible €90m (£76.8m) bid expected to be launched.
But with just one year remaining on his deal at Blackburn Rovers, we think a deal for Brereton Diaz, who was called ‘elite’ by Gary Brazil, would make sense to Spurs, with the player potentially looking to make the jump up to the top flight.
However, in the same breath, could the Chilean provide a sufficient and reliable backup to Kane – especially if the England captain was to get injured amid Tottenham’s Champions League efforts? It wouldn’t be totally risk-free, but it would certainly be an intriguing move if Spurs’ apparent interest is reignited.

Unfortunately, the downside of having Kane at the club means we cant get players Like Martinez, because they know they aren’t good enough to knock him out of the team. It’s actually quite sad using the ‘OH I like it at Inter’ excuse though.
