Tottenham Hotspur are now expected to make their move for Djed Spence this week, with the 21-year-old high on their wishlist this summer.
This is according to reliable Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold, who has been speaking about the Middlesbrough right wing-back on his latest YouTube video.
A number of other clubs are believed to be keeping tabs on Spence, as Nottingham Forest would like him back, while the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United are also said to be signalling an interest.
Reports surfaced towards the end of last week suggesting an agreement had been struck between the north London club and Boro for a fee in the region of £20m.
However, Gold has played down those suggestions, with the Spurs reporter claiming no deal had been agreed upon, with developments on Spence’s future expected to emerge early this week.
He said: “What I’ve been told is that things are expected to develop early this week. I think I said Friday, I did a report possibly, that maybe the next 72 hours or so, there was going to be developments. Early this coming week, Monday/Tuesday, I think we’ll see things start to kick on.”
TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…
Right wing-back is an area in which we feel is essential Spurs address this summer, with only late positive signs from Matt Doherty being shown in that position from last season.
Would you start Spence over Doherty?
Yes
No
Spence has shown promise against Premier League clubs in the FA Cup last season, however, he still does not have any experience in the top flight, so there is certainly an element of risk in a potential deal.
However, improvements have been seen in Doherty under Conte and previously, Victor Moses spoke of how the Italian developed his game during their time at Chelsea.
And with this in mind, we think there are few managers we would back more to get the best out of Spence if he is to join, and Spurs fans should be excited by the prospect, with the potential for a long-term option at right wing-back.
