Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes that Antonio Conte would be interested in signing Inter striker Lautaro Martinez if he had the chance.

Earlier this week, the Tottenham coach went back to his former employers to sign Ivan Perisic and with the club already active in the summer transfer it would seem that chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to back the manager.

Do you think Conte will be backed financially?

The 52-year-old arrived with the side in ninth place in the league after five successive defeats but led Spurs back to the Champions League and talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has tipped the Italian to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City but only with the right investment.

A report from The Mirror has revealed that a deal for Martinez could be on the cards with Conte thought to be a ‘big fan’ of the Argentinian, and speaking to This Is Futbol, O’Rourke has suggested that the Spurs boss would be open to a move.

He said: “I’m sure if you get the option to sign world-class players, you’re going take them, and I’m sure Antonio Conte would if he had the chance to take Lautaro Martinez.”

TIF Thoughts on Martinez to Spurs…

The 37-cap international has enjoyed a tremendous career with Inter, contributing to 95 goals in 177 appearances to date and the player once dubbed ‘spectacular’ by compatriot Lionel Messi would be a great addition for the Whites.

The 24-year-old was Conte’s most used player in the Italian capital playing 97 times, scoring 40 goals as well as producing 19 assists in a truly stellar period for the Nerazzurri.

Although Harry Kane did stay relatively clear of injury this season he has a history of fitness problems and Martinez would be sure to provide more than able cover should the England captain be unavailable.

The north London club were heavily linked with a £60m move for the sharp-shooter last summer but with Romelu Lukaku signing for Chelsea from Inter the deal never materialised.

However, in an ironic turn of events with Lukaku wishing to return to Italy his transfer could benefit Spurs should they wish to rekindle their efforts to sign Martinez.
