The Athletic journalist David Ornstein has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur may benefit from Everton’s current financial status as they look to sign Richarlison.
Ornstein was speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast discussing Spurs’ busy transfer window thus far, having revealed the news on Sunday that Tottenham were interested in signing the Brazilian forward, with €60m (£51m) the price mooted.
The journalist pointed out that Everton would be seeking a higher fee for a player they paid an initial £35m to Watford for in 2018.
With the Hornets guaranteed 10% of any fee over £40m, journalist Rudy Galetti has stated that the Goodison Park club are looking for as much as €70m (£60m) for the 25-year-old, but Tottenham are aiming to “shell out a little less” and they may not have to meet the Toffees’ demands, as Ornstein has pointed out.

He said: “There is some interest from Tottenham, but no, they’re not in negotiations with Everton yet. That may follow, of course.
“At this point in time, Everton are setting an extremely high asking price for Richarlison, even though he’s only got two years to go on his contract – although you might say that’s the peak time at which you should sell.
“But Tottenham won’t come to the level of finance that Everton would be looking for at this point, but there are a number of people around the game who think that with Everton’s financial position, they may, as the window goes on, get squeezed into accepting a lower figure for him – and that’s when Tottenham might feel that they can pounce.”

The 35-cap Brazil international may be unlikely to start in Antonio Conte’s first XI, but could be a valuable addition to the team, however, paying above and beyond is perhaps not advisable.
Back in April, Football Insider claimed that the Merseysiders were aware of their significant financial losses in recent years and that the figures need to be addressed, with the club willing to listen to offers for both Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Of the two, the Brazilian sees his contract expire first in 2024 – meaning he could be the most likely to depart.
He has already made it clear that he wishes to move on, and that could sweeten the deal for Spurs as the transfer window rolls on.
