Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are in the driving seat to sign Championship defender Djed Spence.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to increase their interest in Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence, but they might face competition from newly found Premier League side Nottingham Forest, who Spence spent last season on loan with, in the Championship.
Spence was a mainstay in the Forest side that gained promotion to the Premier League, he featured 46 times in all competitions whilst contributing with three goals and five assists, which was enough to earn him a place in the Championship Team of the Season.
With Spurs showing interest in Spence, O’Rourke claimed to GiveMeSport that the North London club are in the box seat to acquire the services of the young defender.
“Middlesbrough are definitely open to offers for Spence this summer, and also, he would boost Tottenham’s homegrown quota as well, which has been a concern for everyone at the club. So, I think Tottenham are definitely in the box seat for Djed Spence,” O’Rourke said.

Spence impressed whilst on loan with Forest last season as he helped them gain promotion to the Premier League which has caught the eye of Antonio Conte ahead of the summer transfer window, and due to him not having any experience in the top flight, he could be a cheap option for Spurs.
However, Spence might be inclined to sign a permanent deal with Forest as he knows he will be one of the first names on the team sheet, if they did not get promoted, then he would almost definitely not sign for Forest and join a side in the Premier League.
Spurs qualified for the Champions League after clinching the fourth spot ahead of rivals Arsenal, so Conte will be looking to make additions to the squad, and due to Spence being just 21-years-old, he could develop slowly into the starting XI and be part of the club’s long-term future.
