Chronicle’s Newcastle editor Aaron Stokes has claimed that Newcastle United will need to sign another striker even if Hugo Ekitike arrives.

Speaking on the Everything is Black and White podcast, Stokes discussed the ongoing situation regarding The Toon’s current options going forward.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that the Magpies have an agreement in place with Reims for the teenage hitman Ekitike and the striker’s agent is now in talks with the St. James’ Park outfit.

Craig Hope claimed that talks had stalled but journalist Graeme Bailey seems to have settled the confusion stating that an injury that the forward sustained is holding up a move and that a medical should take place this week.

Nevertheless, even with the arrival of the 19-year-old Stokes is of the impression that Eddie Howe will still need to recruit an out-an-out number nine in the case that Callum Wilson’s injury problems continue and insists that they can’t rely on Chris Wood for cover.

Will Ekitike join Newcastle?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

(44:37)”The club medical team will be well aware of this hamstring issue but I think as we said before, it needs to be Ekitike and a proven number nine at that. I don’t think you know you can rely on him, for all it is going to be an exciting deal I don’t think that can be the only attacking option that they bring in this summer.”

TIF Thoughts on another striker…

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Despite half the game time, Wilson scored two goals more than Wood’s tally of six last season.

The New Zealand international joined from Burnley back in January but failed to prove a consistent source of goals for the side. Just 31.4% (16) of his 51 shots were on target and he averaged just 0.53 shots on target per 90 minutes.

Back in May, Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin was heavily linked with a move so perhaps that could be an option but for now it would seem that getting Ekitike over the line is a priority and perhaps then Newcastle can reassess their options.
